It's interesting to remember that Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) - the now almost mythic healthcare success story of recent years, developed by John Kabat Zinn, Saki Santorelli and colleagues, was developed as a sort of medical 'last resort' for chronic pain sufferers in the basement of the Massacheusets University Medical Centre. Even from the earliest days MBSR was designed to assist people with chronic pain and other stress related conditions that were essentially untreatable within the current medical system.
